Behind many a
beautiful boat is a story of the sea. For
example, the Viking longboat’s sea kindly
lines evolved as their dauntless crews
ventured to distant shores in any weather.
The distinct sheer and flared bows of a
North Sea trawler counter winter gales and
protect crews from heavy breaking seas.
The Kiel Classic has a story to tell too.
After scouring the world market for a
suitable motorboat with no success, marine
photographer Peter Neumann decided to design
and build his own vessel. It was to be a
fast, sea worthy boat capable of keeping
pace with naval and commercial ships running
at speed. It had to run dry to protect
camera equipment. It had to have a fine bow
to slice waves, and a deep V to reduce
slamming. It required lift in the fore ship
for heavy weather work. Extravagant
overnight accommodation was not mandatory,
but in exchange, a wide operational radius.
The boat had to be easily operated, best of
all, single handed.
